285 girls in India have renamed themselves because their name “Nokoshi” literally means “Unwanted”. The public renaming ceremony took place in the Satara district where the girls were allowed to choose their own new name. Many of the girls opted to rename themselves because of the names’ meaning and the embarrassment that came along with it.
The girls parents were following a gender bias tradition in which, if they did not have a boy by their third or fourth child, they would call the newborn Nokoshi in hope that the next child will be a boy.
Baramati MP Supriya Sule addressed the girls at the ceremony, “Even if your name is “unwanted” we need you girls in the State. In Maharashtra, girls will be treated equal to boys.”
