Two state representatives in Springfield, Missouri, USA are at logger heads over plans to rename part of a road to ‘West Sunshine’ in memory of Simon Wiesenthal, the Nazi hunter and holocaust survivor. Representative Lampe failed last year to get the same stretch of road named after the Rabbi Abraham Heschel, who was a leading 20th Century civil rights veteran and Jewish theologian.
The plans almost went through, but failed when Heschel’s daughter baulked at the road being named for him when another part of the street is being cleaned by a local neo Nazi organisation. The organisation adopted the highway through a state sponsored litter control program.
The other representative wants the road renamed in honour of a local retired councillor. Given the fact that the street is currently known by the exciting moniker of Farm Road 142, pretty much anything would be an improvement!
