San Diego Street to be Renamed After Gay Rights Activist Harvey Milk

Hillcrest, a diverse and vibrant neighborhood in San Diego, might soon be home to the first street in the city named after civil rights leader Harvey Milk.

A residential street currently named Blaine Avenue could be renamed “Harvey Milk Street” after the openly gay politician who held public office in San Francisco in 1977. Milk was one of the main outlets for the gay rights movement during the 1970s. His civil rights work was cut short when he was assasinated in 1978.

The street which is proposed to be renamed would be a symbol to the LGBT community in San Diego because it leads directly into the heart of the LGBT community center.

The City Council will vote on the proposal and if it passes the street name will be changed in time for Milk’s birthday on May 22nd.
