Children’s Film “Puss In Boots” Too Offensive for United Arab Emirates

“Puss in Boots” is a computer-animated adventure film, created by Dreamworks and starring the memorable cat character made famous in the Shrek franchise. The story follows the title character and his sidekicks Humpty Dumpty and Kitty Softpaws, in their adventures to save the world from an ancient power unleashed by Jack and Jill, two dangerous outlaws. The humorous film starts Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayak and Billy Bob Thornton and was released in October 2011.

However, the Shrek spinoff will be renamed before it is released in the United Arab Emirates, because the word “Puss” in the title could possibly cause offense. Censorship rules in the UAE are much more strict than in the western world, and anything which could be interpreted as a reference to sex and nudity is completely taboo. Banderas and Hayak have been asked to call the film “Cat in Boots” during all promotional spots in the UAE.
