The prime minister of Ukraine has said that a towns decision to rename a street after a batallian that fought alongside Nazi troops is shameful. Peace Street in Razliv, Western Ukraine, has been renamed Nachtigall Battalion Warriors Street. The Nachtigall was one of two battalions made up of ethnic Ukrainians in Nazi occupied Poland in 1941 and were among the first units to invade the Soviet Union alongside German troops.
Prime Minister Mykola Azarov commented “I was shocked. It’s hard to imagine such things taking place in our country… It’s a shame for our country.” The Russian foreign ministry has also condemned the renaming and has said it hopes the decision is reversed.
